Alan Syliboy and The Thundermakers with special guest Gina Burgess

Alan Syliboy was born and raised in Truro and lives at Millbrook First Nation. He looks to the indigenous Mi’kmaq petroglyph (stone etchings) tradition for inspiration, and developed his own artistic vocabulary out of those forms.

Alan’s band, The Thundermakers,  are  Guitarist/Vocals Hubert Francis star of Brookes Diamond production, “Drum” from Elsipogtog First Nation, Lead guitarist Evan Syliboy formerly with Alan’s band Lonecloud, composer, vocals & percussionist - Julianne Syliboy,  vocals & percussionist - Joanne Hatfield, and bassist, composer, sound designer, video/sound editor,  Lukas Pearse of Halifax NS, plus group leader, percussionist/spoken word artist Alan Syliboy. The show consists of songs, spoken word and stories accompanied by multi-media art film and live performance.

Although this is the core group, Alan frequently calls upon other musicians and dancers to enhance his live performances.

About Gina:

Halifax-based musician Gina Burgess is an accomplished performer, crafter, yoga instructor and music teacher. Studying violin since the age of five and teaching music professionally since 2001, Gina has become a sought after soloist and educator across Canada and beyond. 

With over 20 years of classical training, Gina excels in virtually any musical setting: She is one fifth of the Juno nominated Iqaluit-based Arctic rock band The Jerry Cans, is a four-time ECMA award winner with the gypsy-jazz outfit Gypsophilia, she fronts her own klezmer band Der Heisser, is is a regular collaborator in flamenco and Arabic music ensembles. 

Gina has toured Europe twice over with Tim Crabtree’s atmospheric ensemble; Paper Beat Scissors, and with folk-pop artist Gabrielle Papillon. Along with The Jerry Cans, Gina has performed and conducted youth workshops in Canada, Australia, Greenland, New Zealand, and Europe.

In addition to touring, Gina makes regular trips to remote communities in Nunavut to perform, teach music and instruct yoga/meditation classes.

Gina has collaborated with the likes of Kanye West, Maria Osende Flamenco Co., Shauntay Grant, Dinuk Wijeratne, Erin Costelo, Hey Rosetta!, Joseph Petric, the Nova Scotia Youth Orchestra, Rich Aucoin, Duane Andrews, NAFAS, Symphony Nova Scotia, Lily Frost, DJ Spooky and Alex Conde.
